Music for the right mood

As a child, I grew up in a no music environment. We even had to mute the commercials because of background music. However, the house policy changed as we were growing up and what I was taught was wrong became a norm.

I don’t regard music as a big taboo although at certain point I was taught it was. I think there are many more morals and behaviours that we have to focus on that could pollute our mind and soul. I would not pass judgment on a person by their music preference and ignore their good conduct.

Nevertheless, I am a strong believer in the effects of music, even if it was just monotonic beat. It is one of the inputs that our mind has to deal with and process. From a psychological and emotional side as well as physiological response to the sound. Certain beats accelerate your heart rate and induce certain hormones.

Sad music and set you in a depressive mood while you would instinctly pick slow music to relax. To kick start your day or to exercise you might respond better to a fast moving beats and your body would move more readily.

Music is a strong form of communication no doubt. An important way to express a plethora of feelings and people can relate to the music even if the lyrics where of a foreign tongue.

I feel very selective about the type of music around me as I select the food I eat. It has been long studied that it even affects your shopping behaviour. So I feel that it has to be taken more seriously and when played in public it should be the type that would induce harmony and positive attitude with appropriate words rather than random selection from the charts. I feel very conscious if surrounded by music that does not appeal to me. Strong beats disturb my mood. For instance when you are our for some Italian or French cuisine a smooth music from such countries would be more appropriate than heavy metal, the second might be a way to vent out anger rather than enjoy ravioli.

This is just from the music side. The lyrics are another matter, they would easy their way through your unconscious mind. I am not against personal choice but when something is put in the public domain and played in the background it should be more thought through. Just a thought :)
